About me

Mountain Man

My name is Jorge Camacho and for over 10 years I have been teaching high school chemistry students in South Florida.  Born and raised in the (305), I attended the University of Miami where I quickly learned that spending all day in a lab with limited to no human contact was absolute drugery.  So I chose to warp the minds of blossoming adolescents and years later I still love what I do, the warping part, and take absolute delight in teaching as well.  I figure as long as I have more days where I leave work whistling, that is better than what most people do on a regular basis!

I think that growing up in a state as vertically challenged as Florida, I quickly developed an appreciation for mountains.  Well let me rephrase this, when you live on the highest point in Miami, 26 feet above sea level, what most people consider hills, I see as HUGE!!!  Therefore, having traveled up the east coast of the US several times I always admired waterfalls, curving roads, and plunging hills.  (I will try not to raise my hands in the air this trip, but I make no promises of screaming out WHEE!!).  Therefore, I love hiking along “mountain” trails, paddling a rushing river, and in general any winding or curving road.

Now I have to confess that I have pitched a tent about 6 times in my life, (the ones with poles…that go into the ground)…so while I have enjoyed a lot of America’s outdoors…there is a lot of outdoors that I have never seen.  So lets just say that during this expedition, I am counting on some nice campgrounds to make my adventure a little bit easier.  While I know that these shots having me look like a rugged outdoorsman, at least in my head it works, I would say that I am more of a campy/weekend trekker.  What can I say a couple of days hiking and my peppers are killing me…nothing like a nice relaxing massage to unwind after seeing all that nature!!

I like to think that this was my first taste of the wind in my hair!!

So this was my ATV on Santorini, we called it “Rusty”, for obvious reasons.

  1. Wow! Your blog is terrific! Jorge, your heartfelt words do portray the very essence of your being: romantic, loving, intense, humorous, adventurous. And then, there’s the courage of sharing your sentiments. It is a wonderful time for you to explore this great nation which we are so priviledged to call, “home”. Three things are of agonizing worry to me:
    1. The vehicle–your arms and legs are your fenders.
    2. Riding solo–you’re an easy target, your bike breaks, you get get sick.
    3. I am confident of your abilities, but not of those of other drivers, specially around mountain curves and cliffs.
I do ask you to please consider riding with others. Your safety and well-being are paramount. All my love, Mom

  2. DUDE!!! I love your energy! May you find the peace you are looking for!

    xoxoxo

  3. Mr. Camacho,
So basically, this “About Me” sums you up wonderfully, I think! Especially the “warp the minds of blossoming adolescents” part, and clearly after getting my grades, you did just that, but it was a positive warp no doubt. I am so very excited for you to embark on this adventure, and you can be sure that I will be leaving replies to your posts.

Lots of luck and may you enjoy every minute of it!
    Vicky

  8. Hey Mr. C,

I am happy to hear about your journey and I wish you the best of luck. Now that I am a college graduate, I am struggling with much of the realities of life, but I hope to get back on track soon and perhaps plan a journey of my own in the process.

P.S. I got Magna Cum Laude with a BA in chemistry…much of which I am thankful for your inspiration in high school.

Hope to hear from you soon,
    Frances

  9. Jorge…Cool website!
You know me, and how I am conservative so I won’t give you anymore advice than your mother already has. Won’t even try to change your mind about this trek, I know that you are hard headed like me. So I leave you with this message: I hope your adventure gives you the closure that you are looking for and the peace you seek. I just wish you had picked some other form of transportation, am…………. like a car! Ya I know, the price of gas will kill you, I know your budget…you are a teacher. I also know you are not religious, but to bad I will be praying for your safety and the closure you are seeking; but most important thing is that when you return you are ready for a new beginning. Oh and remember always let your family know where you are, at all times. I could only imagine, they must be freaking out! Good luck and keep away from Alaska (I saw that movie too!)

Call me when ever you can

  10. Hi, Jorge!
Just found your site. I hope you return with peace and tranquility in your life. Happy to see you posting and receiving messages as Maria will be anxiously awaiting to hear from you daily. Perhaps on your return you will drop in for a nice glass of wine and pasta at Francesca’s! We love you, Jorge. Travel safe!

  11. Hi, sweetie!

I have been spying on you being a stupid chickenshit. This past year has been a crazy roller coaster for us both. I hope you know how much I love you and Beth. I feel like she is missing from my life even though we haven’t seen each other in a few years. I can’t even begin to compare that to you feelings, of course. My cancer is at bay and we are living it up near the beach now. Be safe and I’ll keep spying on you.

    XOXO
